Craftsmanship Techniques

Time-honored methods meet modern precision

Joinery Methods

The foundation of durable furniture construction

Mortise & Tenon

Traditional joint providing exceptional strength. Used in frames, chairs, and structural elements where durability is paramount.

Tools: Chisels, mortising machine, precision router

Materials: Compatible with all hardwoods

Dovetail Joints

Signature joinery for drawers and boxes. Interlocking tails and pins create both mechanical strength and visual beauty.

Tools: Dovetail saw, chisels, router jig

Materials: Best with dense hardwoods like oak and walnut

Biscuit Joinery

Modern method for panel alignment and edge joining. Provides strong, invisible connections in tabletops and wide panels.

Tools: Biscuit joiner, clamps

Materials: Works with all wood types

Box Joints

Precise finger joints for corners and frames. Offers clean aesthetics and reliable strength for modern designs.

Tools: Table saw with dado blade, jig

Materials: Ideal for medium-density woods

Sanding & Surface Preparation

The foundation of a flawless finish

Progressive Grit Sequence

We progress through carefully selected grits (80, 120, 180, 220, 320) ensuring each stage removes the scratches from the previous. This methodical approach guarantees a surface ready for finishing.

Grain Raising

After initial sanding, we raise the grain with a damp cloth, then sand again at the final grit. This technique prevents grain from rising after finish application, ensuring a smooth final surface.

Final Inspection

Every surface is inspected under raking light to identify and address any remaining imperfections before finishing begins. Attention to detail at this stage determines the quality of the final result.

Finishing Techniques

Protection and beauty in every layer

Oil Finishes

Natural oils penetrate the wood, enhancing grain and providing protection. Ideal for pieces that will develop a patina over time.

Best for: Tables, cutting boards, kitchen items

Materials: Tung oil, linseed oil, Danish oil

Lacquer

Durable, clear finish that provides excellent protection. Can be matte, satin, or high-gloss depending on desired aesthetic.

Best for: High-traffic furniture, modern designs

Materials: Nitrocellulose, water-based lacquers

Stain & Seal

Custom color matching with protective topcoat. Allows for precise color control while maintaining wood grain visibility.

Best for: Matching existing furniture, color coordination

Materials: Water-based stains, polyurethane sealers

Wax Finishing

Traditional finish providing a soft, natural feel. Requires periodic maintenance but offers unmatched tactile quality.

Best for: Antique reproductions, heirloom pieces

Materials: Beeswax, carnauba wax blends
